Which boat day

Turtle trip or Shipwreck Beach: which Zakynthos boat day?

A three-hour speedboat trip on the south coast with a chance of turtles, or a full day on the north-west coast built round the shipwreck cove and the Blue Caves. What each is, what each is not, and who each suits.

Quick answer

Pick the turtle trip if you want a short sea outing in the marine park with a chance of seeing a loggerhead. Pick the Shipwreck Beach day if you want Zakynthos's best-known sights across a full day and care little about wildlife. Each lies on a different coast, so neither stands in for the other.

The short answer

These are different days, not two versions of one. The turtle trip is about three hours in a small speedboat on the south coast, in and around the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. The Shipwreck Beach tour is listed at 8 to 9 hours and combines land and sea on the north-west coast. The turtle trip is the better choice if turtles matter to you, if you want a short outing or if you are staying on the south side. Take the Shipwreck Beach day when you want the island's most photographed sights and have a full day to give. Neither guarantees the thing it is known for, and neither is better in every way.

Where each one goes

Wikipedia places Laganas Bay on the south-east side of Zakynthos, enclosed by the Vasilikos and Marathia peninsulas, and says the bay is the site of the first national marine park. The turtle trip works there, then follows the coast to the Keri caves and Marathonisi. Wikipedia places Navagio, the cove usually called Shipwreck Beach, on the north-west shore, isolated by high cliffs and accessible only by boat. It also says that numerous natural blue caves are carved into the cliffs around Cape Skinari, and that only small boats can reach them.

How long, and in what boat

The turtle trip is a semi-private speedboat with 8 to 14 people, lasting about three hours. The Shipwreck Beach tour is listed as a guided small-group day of 8 to 9 hours, and the booking page says you board a glass-bottom boat or a speedboat for the Blue Caves and Shipwreck Beach. A shorter option exists on the same coast: a cruise from Porto Vromi that stops at Shipwreck Beach for a photograph, and a swim cruise from Agios Nikolaos harbour that reaches the Blue Caves and Navagio Bay.

What you actually see

On the turtle trip you look for loggerheads at the surface, pass Cameo islet, reach the caves and arches of the Keri coast and swim at Marathonisi. On the Shipwreck Beach day you see a cove where, Wikipedia says, the coaster Panagiotis ran aground on 5 October 1980 in stormy weather and poor visibility, and the blue caves that tourists find popular. The light, the cliffs and the water colour are the show. Both days involve swimming.

Wildlife and what is not promised

The turtle trip is a wildlife trip, and a sighting is never guaranteed: reviewers say so, and loggerheads spend most of their time underwater. The Shipwreck Beach day is not a wildlife trip. Its promise is a place, and a place does not hide, though the sea and the weather can still change how close a boat gets. That difference is the heart of the choice: one trip sells a chance, the other a certain view.

The state of Shipwreck Beach

Wikipedia records that a cliff above the beach collapsed in 2018 and that the beach was closed for a time and swimming and anchoring were banned. A landslide in September 2022 followed an earthquake, and Wikipedia says access to the beach was then closed to visitors for summer 2023, while boats could approach but swimming near the beach was not allowed. Rules like these change. Read the current booking page for how the day treats the beach, and do not assume you will walk on the sand.

Who each day suits

The turtle trip suits travellers staying in or near Laganas, people who want to be back in time to do something else, and anyone who values a wildlife chance. It is not suitable, says the booking page, for pregnant women, people with back problems, wheelchair users or people prone to seasickness. The Shipwreck Beach day suits first-time visitors who want the island's famous sights in a single outing and have time. Check its booking page for its own list of who should skip it.

Who this isn't for

Skip the turtle trip if you want a sure wildlife encounter, if a small fast boat worries you or if you need step-free access: the booking page lists wheelchair users among those it does not suit. Skip the Shipwreck Beach day if you have only a few hours, if you dislike a long day on the move or if you mainly want turtles. Neither tour is a bad choice, and each is wrong for someone who wants what the other sells.

Ratings, without the spin

The turtle trip shows 4.6 from about 3,870 reviews on the booking page. The Shipwreck Beach and Blue Caves tour shows 4.8 from about 6,580. A higher number does not mean it is the better choice for you, because the two sell different things. Read what each set of reviews praises, and match it to what you want from the day.

Four questions to settle it

How long do you have? A few hours points to the turtle trip and a whole day to the north-west. Do turtles matter? If they do, only the south-coast trip is built around them. Which side of the island are you staying on? The two tours start at opposite ends, so a long transfer may decide for you. And how do you feel about a small fast boat? The booking page for the turtle trip lists seasickness among the reasons to choose something else. Because the tours sit on opposite sides of the island, a long stay can hold both, one on each of two separate days; a visitor with a single free day should decide first whether the animal or the scenery matters more.

Booking

Both go through GetYourGuide. For the turtle trip, a cancellation made more than a day ahead is free. The calendar on this page checks the turtle trip, and the second card in the booking section leads to the north-west day. The guide is independent of both boat companies and of the marine park, so it has no reason to push one tour over the other.

Frequently asked questions
